NEW SINGLE: "The Skin I'm In" Featured in a performance on the debut episode of the CW Network's, "Troubadour, TX" (in a significantly edited version), this new recording of "The Skin I'm In" reveals the funky, soulful energy which has developed over a decade of performing the song live. The personal and uplifting lyric is one that receives a lot of feedback from listeners and Russell's intense performance on this recording is reason enough to understand why this particular song is so popular among WR fans. Originally released on 2001's, "Time To Go", this new single is a substantial update; a dramatic variation of the song as compared to the previous recording.

Up Against It - 2010 CD
$11.49
A vibrant blues/soul outing, Up Against It, is Woody Russell's long-awaited new album on the CUTS Music Group label and a testimony to his long held passion for the blues. Across nine tracks the recording highlights his incisive guitar chops in a way that no previous release of his has and brings new meaning to the term "contemporary blues". But, in addition to the stinging fret-board firepower, Woody's vocals pour on the soul and remind us that he absolutely means every phrase, every word. "Up Against It" celebrates, aches, rocks and soothes; his most thoroughly potent recording to date. Here's proof that modern blues is alive and well, and in good hands; not just because he can pull it off, but because - as Woody himself has stated - it's his "only way forward".

A bold album of richly penned songs that merge Woody Russell's distinctly soulful Americana with his deep respect for jazz and roots music. Nominated for IMA "Album of the Year" in '06, it clearly moves him toward recognition as one of only a handful of top-shelf, one-of-a-kind songwriters and guitarists. Featuring the
stellar steel guitar and Dobro playing of Danny Bennett and bassist extraordinaire, Tom Benton. A guest vocal appearance by Megan Melara fills out this genuinely talented cast of Austin based musicians. Time To Go further explores WR's diverse sound. Russell and longtime Seattle band-mates, Dan Frank and James Burkman recorded 12 captivating tunes that push the envelope of the roots-rock/Americana genre. This CD represents a final recording session for the trio; the title perhaps suggesting a shift in Woody's musical direction shortly after its release. The songs on this album move smoothly from rockin’ slide guitar riffs and gritty vocals to somber storytelling ballads. On several tracks his custom “Resolectric” guitar kicks up a wicked "banjo on steroids" tone that is a distinctly powerful presence on this CD.

James Burkman - Bass, background vocals
Dan Frank - Drums, percussion

...as simple as that is Russell's 1996 debut release. It represents this particular trio's first recording effort as a cohesive band led by Woody. It was a substantial breakaway from Russell's previous work with rock bands and various other recording projects. On this debut album, tales of bittersweet relationships and reflections on times past are woven into a colorful collection of earthy songs. WR reveals his "cinematic" lyrical gift as scenes of rural Americana are played out to the sounds of a mostly acoustic setting with cello and oboe complementing a few tracks.

Dan Frank - Drums and percussion
James Burkman - Bass, space-bass and backing vocals
Michelle Molner - background vocals
